We are seeking an experienced Youth Recreation Assistant to support the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service at the Blackwell Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center (JCCC) in Laona, WI. RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Recreation Support
- Provide leadership and practical guidance to students in a group-living environment
- Oversee recreational and physical-fitness activities for students with varying skill levels and backgrounds
- Encourage student participation in organized and self-directed activities
- Promote positive social skills, healthy habits, stress relief, employability, and workplace success
- Instruct students in good sportsmanship, team cooperation, and group activities supporting healthy student interactions
- Meet with students to discuss day-to-day problems encountered during recreational and physical-fitness activities
- Offer practical guidance and propose solutions to routine problems without imposing personal values
- Schedule, coordinate, and supervise recurring group activities
- Arrange reservations and transportation for authorized activities
- Collect payments and distribute information concerning games and activities
- Monitor self-directed activities for compliance with established recreational plans
- Identify process or procedural changes that may increase student participation
- Recommend appropriate modifications to the recreation and physical-fitness program
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment for students participating in recreational and physical-fitness activities
- Explain and enforce all applicable safety rules and regulations
- Confirm students understand safety requirements concerning activities, facilities, and equipment
- Prepare facilities for scheduled activities
- Verify required equipment and supplies are available
- Participate in the Center Behavioral Management System and Student Code of Conduct
- Model appropriate behavior and use positive intervention when working with students
- Reinforce proper workplace and community conduct, appearance, and behavior
- Recognize social, behavioral, or disciplinary problems while maintaining order
- Promote harmony among students and obtain assistance from Center personnel for complicated problems
- Encourage participation among students who may resist leadership or direction
- Navigate potentially hostile exchanges with professionalism and a calm demeanor
- Prepare and submit required monthly recreation and other reports
- Maintain required employee logs accurately
- Operate Government vehicles to transport students to and from authorized offsite activities
- Complete required Government vehicle training
- Follow applicable Government vehicle requirements
REQUIRED BACKGROUND
- Experience and technical knowledge necessary to perform the position’s duties
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English
- Ability to oversee recreational and physical-fitness activities involving students with varying skill levels and backgrounds
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, answer questions, provide info, conduct inspections, and offer counsel
- Ability to maintain order and recognize social, behavioral, or disciplinary problems
- Ability to promote harmony among students and obtain assistance for complicated problems
- Ability to encourage participation among students who may resist leadership or direction
- Ability to navigate potentially hostile exchanges with professionalism and a calm demeanor
- Ability to explain and enforce activity, facility, and equipment safety requirements
- Ability to prepare and maintain required reports and logs
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to meet the requirements for operating Government vehicles
- Ability to meet the physical demands established for the position
- Ability to complete all Job Corps training required for recreation personnel
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Associate of Arts degree or at least one year of related experience working with youth required

- Must be a U.S. citizen or have an Alien Registration authorizing employment in the United States
